However, the findings presented by Karlstrom have been proving to be a bit controversial, and not everyone is in agreement with the information presented about the Canyon. There could be some worry about it in exposing the truth – even though the truth will have to be unraveled. Another geologist, called Wayne Ranney, detailed in a 2019 interview with a Boston radio station called WBUR that the Canyon walls are being torn away by the Colorado River’s gushing waters. For a fact, years have been spent by both amateurs and academics alike to get a diverse assessment of the Grand Canyon and get all the information possible on fossils in the regions. The surprise element brings us back to 2016 when Krill, a Norwegian geologist, took a group of students along Bright Angel Trail for a hiking mission. The journey started out pretty normal, but there was no way Krill imagined he would be a part of a team that would change the way we usually think about the Canyon related to prehistoric life.

Along the Bright Angel Trail, you will come across famous rock formations known in the Grand Canyon, such as the Cheops Pyramid and Brahma Temple. Even though these features are standout for everyone that passes, it was something more “out of sight” that captured Krill’s attention.

During the hike, Krill noticed a large boulder that was resting against the ground in the trail. Moving closer to the boulder and taking the bold step to assess it a little deeper, Krill noticed there were some strange markings and patterns on the rock. The area where the rock fell from was quite evident and was also a famous formation in the Grand Canyon. The section it fell from is known as the Manakacha Formation and was a huge interest for Krill. He knew there was more to those markings than the eyes could see, and he was ready to uncover the secrets that were lying in a fallen boulder.

The Manakacha Formation is a mixture of mudstone and limestone and is a cliff that runs through the Grand Canyon. After a closer look at the rock, he noticed a layer of the rock was also a part of the Supai Group. The rocks have been forming for millions of years and have resulted in a complex geological existence that helps to form the Colorado Plateau. However, with years of weathering and falling-away due to climate and weather conditions, the boulder probably broke off from the Manakacha Formation. It landed on the grounds of the Bright Angel Trail.

Krill was certainly enthused about the markings that he saw on the rock, and he didn’t think twice about getting proof. He took a photo as he stood there and immediately sent it to a University of Nevada paleontologist named Rowland. After taking a closer look at the photo, Rowland came to the same conclusion his friend arrived at: the patterns signified a link to creatures that existed long ago. The fossils were about to give the eager paleontologists answers to long-held questions. With numerous tests and research over the next two years, they discovered some critical details, which they announced at a Society of Vertebrate Paleontology annual meeting.

But, all was not yet fully discovered as it would take a few more years to arrive at the true details about the rock. Krill’s discovery was about to be a ground-breaking revelation that many never thought would be true about life before the formation of the Grand Canyon. Rowland and a few of his colleagues, Zachary Jensen and Mario Caputa, made a release on August 19, 2020, in PLOS ONE, a scientific journal. They detailed the findings of a fossilized trackway in the Grand Canyon to include the discovery that was made on the Bright Angel Trail.

Studies have been conducted on the Manakacha Formation and other geological maps in the region, which have given the edge to researchers in finding out more about the tracks and what they are linked to. From those findings and other details that have surfaced, we have to say Krill was right in his decision to stop to take a closer look at the boulder that had fallen. There were unique features on the rock that pushed Krill to engage the services of other paleontologists in getting more information he was not able to get on his own.

After conducting lengthy research and study on the footprints found on the rock, Rowland was able to come to the conclusion that the prints dated back to some 313 million years ago. There was some form of connection to the Carboniferous Period and made them record-breakers in connecting to life in the past. They turned out to be the oldest fossilized vertebrate footprints ever to be discovered in the Grand Canyon from other observations. This was a historical moment in the life of the paleontologists as they never expected to unearth something this great.

Interestingly, that was not the only intriguing thing about the discovery. The researchers were not readily able to tell the type of creature that left the footprint, but it was clear to them that it was a special type of reptile. Detailing his findings from the NPS in August 2020, Rowland noted the reptile was a special kind seeing their mark has been left for so long. Rowland noted the prints were evidence of vertebrate animals exiting and traversing through sand dunes. It was a clear record that shelled-egg-laying animals also existed in years past.

Historical checks detailed that the tracks were made when what we now know as Arizona was a plain land situated close to the Equator. So, Rowland believed two of the creatures walked across the area diagonally, which would later become part of the Manakacha Formation from the look of the marks. These creatures had to be a special kind as for their marks to still be evident in today’s existence, there was something worth investigating about them. So, what more was the team up to?

Baseless Theories
However, there are many people who believe that the original theory of separate creatures creating the footprints is somewhat baseless, and there could be other means by which the prints were left behind. There are also speculations that the same kind of vertebrate could have walked in the area but in different directions. Either way, no matter what one may want to speculate or believe, there is recorded evidence that there are two sets of prints that showed varying journeys of creatures possibly going in different directions and at a different speed.

Lateral-Sequence Walk Pattern
Doing the necessary checks and research on the patterns on the rock, the team could conclude that one of the creatures traveled in a way that a lateral-sequence walk pattern was created. The discovery was able to guide Rowland in giving a detailed interview with The Arizona Republic back in August 2020. He noted the walking pattern indicated the creature walked in a style where the left rear foot would proceed the front left leg followed by the right rear foot than the front right foot. All we can say is that they are a team of geniuses to be able to detect so much from so little details.

In today’s existence, living species of tetrapods such as cats and dogs do have a lateral-sequence walk pattern, especially when they walk slowly. Rowland made this revelation as he tried to develop supporting claims for his discovery on the rock. Rowland noted the Bright Angel Trail tacks showed evidence of this walking pattern from early days while these vertebrates existed. This information was relatively new as it was not readily available before such deep investigation was done. We may need to take a closer look at our pets as they go in slow motion.

However, with everything that has been said about the discovery and all the research being conducted, there is one major question on many minds. How did the footprints manage to stay intact for so many years – millions of years, that is! From further investigations, it was revealed the possibility of this happening could be that water and sand had covered the tracks and preserved them. So, as time passed, the prints were able to embed themselves in the rocks and stayed in tune for millions of years, and became part of the Manakacha Formation. This hidden treasure was probably waiting for the right moment to reveal itself to the world.

But, as investigations and research continue, we may have to agree that Rowland’s findings are nowhere in concluding the full truth. The findings may even cause a bit of stir and form much controversy as it relates to other experts in the paleontology circle. After Rowland made his findings public, Grand Canyon’s Mark Nebel detailed in an interview with the Associated Press that most of that information could be far-fetched. Nebel noted there is a lot to disagree with in terms of the age of the rocks and the tracks that were found on them. In addition, the interpretation of the type of creature leaving the mark could also be questionable.

Either way, hundreds, if not more, paleontologists and geologists visit the Bright Angel Trail on a yearly basis as the fallen boulder is a center of fascination and attraction for them. But for Nebel, he noted scientists had trained eyes so the least thing would catch their attention. Seeing the revelation was made to the world, more and more people will come and take a look and do their own research. After getting as many details as he could about the region and forming the falls, Hennepin went back, did his little research, and released a written piece around five years later titled A New Discovery. In this release, you could find all the details about his journey to the area and the discovery of the fall. The name “Niagara” was said to be developed from the Iroquoian culture from the word “onguiaahra,” which means “the strait. This was the first time the word Niagara would be used like that. With these new developments, a lot of people started to flock to the area in a bid to get their fair share of the beauty the falls provided.

Railroad passenger numbers started to increase in the 1800s, and Niagara Falls would soon become one of the hit sites for tourists from all over the world. They could use it to power their factories and mills. By 1895 channeled in, there was a hydroelectric generating station established close to the falls. It was by far the largest and most technical facility of its own to ever be created in the world.

The station was really innovative, but there was a drawback to it…the electricity it produced could only push power up to 300 feet. However, inventor Nikolas Tesla decided he needed to take things up a notch and hit technology to the next level. Before long, people in Buffalo, New York, were able to experience electricity that was powered by the rush of the current-infused waters of Niagara Falls.

Tesla was able to make history by implementing his induction motor that would channel power to thousands of people. Initially, it was the starting point for a breakthrough in power supply and the techniques used in the process.
