It wouldn’t even be a couple of minutes later before she was approached by a second member of staff, who asked her to stop her workout and to put another shirt on. Sarah’s frustration levels were starting to grow, and she bit back with a sharp retort, telling the employee that she was already wearing a shirt. She didn’t know it at the time, but the gym was about to issue an ultimatum that she never thought she would hear.

As Sarah was about to continue with her workout, the staff member asked her once again to put on a “whole shirt”. The employee explained that it was an official policy of the gym that patrons needed to be covered in full, and that she was in violation of that policy by being there in a crop top with an exposed midriff. Sarah did not feel like she was inappropriately dressed, and felt singled out among the crowd of others who may well also fall into this grey-area of being “fully clothed”.
