Service dogs are traditionally required to work with a group of different officers when they are out on patrol, but Kyle only had his eye on one partner right from when he finished his training. John and Kyle became a formidable pair, bonding in a way akin to owner and pet. The two had a very different dynamic to typical owners and their pets of course, considering the type of work that they were doing.

Keeping Professional Boundaries
As much as John would have liked to keep Kyle at home with him after work, the rules didn’t allow for this professional boundary to be crossed. It was decided that Kyle would be better suited to an ordinary family while he wasn’t working, so Smith and his loved ones were a good fit for the job when they were approached about adopting him. Still, Kyle struggled being away from John when it was time for him to rest and regain his strength ahead of his next patrol run.
